To the tune of "The Dawning of the Day"
Dawning of Anzac Day
God rest you William Moeki
And God rest you Albert Foote
God rest you Herbert Richardson
And young James of Otahuhu
God rest you Harold Harding
In your grave far, far away
God rest you all who gave their blood
At the dawning of the day
Not in vain you gave your life
Gallant hearts of Kiwi birth
Not in vain you stood your ground
'Neath the fire of hell on earth
Men of Auckland, men of Dunedin
Men whose names shall ne'er decay
But will shine like stars to lead us on
To the dawning of the day
Stormy nights and frozen morns
Both have failed to quench the flame
That has guided Anzac armies
Through years of pride and shame
And 'twill flash the deathless glowing
Making bright the upward way
When our men shall march to honour
For the dawning of the day
For the fields your blood has hallowed
O you host of Anzac dead
In the light of Freedom's morning
New Zealand yet shall tread
When the foemen reel before us
In the thunder of the fray
We shall shout your name in triumph
At the dawning of the day
God rest you William Moeki
And God rest you Albert Foote
God rest you Herbert Richardson
And young James of Otahuhu
God rest you Harold Harding
In your grave far, far away
God rest you all who gave their blood
At the dawn of ANZAC day
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
It's not entirely original. I found a version of Dawning of the day that was easily messed with to make it work for the occassion.
If I can get the tune well enough I plan to sing it at the Dogs Bollix on Tuesday night.
edit: The names used are all those of ANZAC soldiers who died in ANZAC cove. I found only 1 maori name on the entire list, and it was too long to fit in. hmmm.
Edit on edit: The names I picked were all Aussie soldiers. Now they are Kiwis who died on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli. They were all under 25 when they dies, some as young as 18. Their bodies are still there.
