Protesting Auckland style
Oct. 28th, 2005 09:37 pmHmmm, is it just me, or should you let the police know that you intent to hold a rally and marh that will disrupt traffi of the main st of the biggest city in the country?
Apparently if your protesting violence against women, having the 'patriacal state' involved is counter-productive. And here I was thinking that male doesn't equal rapist or wife beater...apparently I was wrong.
Women uite to take back the night (which isn't the best slogan imo, since the night has never been entirely safe, for anyone), is about being a man hater... 'riots not diets' being one chant that came up.
Anyway... the group I went with have decided that the next time around, we're organising it, and doing it right.
If your concerned with domestic violence and rape, make that you issue, not feminism in general.
I came up with a domestic violence chant for next time
"stop the violence in the home
Speak out/get out
you're not alone"
I did like a couple of their chants
"we are women
we are strong
violene against us
way too long"
"2, 4, 6, 8,
Stop the violence
Stop the rape"
I nearly got punched by a random youth...he came running at me during the marh, fists bared...I was ready for him though. It would've been funny to have him hit me, just to see what would happen (100 odd women protesting against just that? lol).
I had to take the megaphone (withoiut a permit) a couple of times...once to teah them how to lead a hant, and once to tell them what to do if the cops decided to break us up...they didn't know about passive resistane, only police rape.
Damn, I miss my activist days.
